  • Were you a little girl in the 1970′s??

IF YOU WERE A LITTLE GIRL IN THE 70′S …

You had that Fisher Price Doctor’s Kit with
    a stethoscope that actually worked.

Not for me…at that point I was still a girly girl, but not for long…

You owned a bicycle with a banana seat
and a plastic basket with flowers on it.
    Banana seat, yes….basket…no

You learned to skate with actual skates
(not roller blades) that had metal wheels
Yes at the roller derby.  To the theme song from “Greatest American Hero”.

You thought Gopher from Love Boat was cute (admit it!).
Yes I did…I also found Julie and Vicky oddly appealing…

You had nightmares after watching Fantasy Island
That show scared the bejesus outta me…what fun!

You had rubber boots for rainy days and
Moon boots for snowy days. YEAH!
Yes, I remember those…especially how the stuffing came out along with your foot when you pulled them off!

You owned a “Slip-n-Slide”, on which you injured
yourself on a sprinkler head more than once.
    Too poor…didn’t own one

You owned “Klick-Klacks” and smacked  yourself in the face more than once.
    I didn’t have those either.

You had either a “bowl cut” or “pixie,” not to mention the “Dorothy Hamill”. People sometimes thought you were a boy.
I had a bowl cut way beyond the point it was still cool to do so.

Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was your most prized possession.
I had Holly Hobbie and Raggedy Anne

You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers.
Yes I had gauchos and poncho.  I might have had knickers too but I don’t remember.

You begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon.
    OOooooohhhhh yes, Simon….
You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those
pink and purple satiny shredded outfits.
I watched the show religiously but could not afford the dolls.

You spent hours in your backyard on your metal swing set with the trapeze. The swing set tipped over at least once.
Yes, I tipped the whole thing over on top of me when I was five and had a concusion and had to get stitches…ouch…

You had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color.
    (Oh yeah!)
Yes, it was a girl scout project

You had a pair of Doctor Scholl’s sandals (the ones with hard sole & the buckle). You also had a pair of salt-water sandals (is this an east coast thing??).

    Nope…flip flops.

You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore
that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture; and you despised Nellie Olson!
I loved Laura.  I tried to get people to call me Half Pint but nobody would.

You wanted your first kiss to be at a roller rink!

I wanted my first kiss to be either Bo Duke or Donny Osmond.

Your hairstyle was described as having “wings” or “feathers” and you kept it “pretty” with the comb you kept in your back pocket.

Yes I had feathers and a back pocket comb.

When you walked, the “wings” flapped up and down,
looked like you were gonna “take off”!
No, my hair is thin and curly…it would flatten and frizz by lunch time.

You know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends, Blueberry Muffin
     and Huckleberry Pie.
I loved how the dolls smelled like fruit.

You carried a Muppets lunch box to school and it was metal,
not plastic.  With the thermos inside!
    Nope, I had Star Wars.

You and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazzard was your boyfriend.
I liked Bo, my sister liked Luke so there were no arguments.

YOU had Star Wars action figures, too!
    Oh yeah baby…

It was a big event in your household each year when the
“Wizard of Oz” would come on TV.
Your mom would break out the popcorn and sleeping bags!
Oh definitely…that and “Sound of Music.”

You often asked your Magic-8 ball the question: “Who will I marry. Shaun Cassidy, Leif
     Garrett, or David Cassidy..?”
    didn’t have a magic 8 ball….definitely Shaun

You completely wore out your Grease, Saturday Night
Fever, and Fame soundtrack record albums.
Yes, wore them out and replaced them with CD’s as an adult

You tried to do lots of arts and crafts, like yarn and
Popsicle-sticks, God’s eyes, decoupage, or those
weird potholders made on a plastic loom.
    Yup….guilty

You made Shrinky-Dinks and put iron-on
    kittens on your t-shirts!
    shrinky dinks, yes…no iron-ons
You used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape player up to the speaker.

    Yup…

You had subscriptions to Dynamite and Tiger Beat
    Just Tiger Beat

You learned everything you needed to know about girl issues from Judy Blume books (Are you there God, It’s me, Margaret.)
Wasn’t allowed to read her because she was banned by the Baptist church
You thought Olivia Newton John’s song “Physical”  was about aerobics.
Of course it is…have you seen that cheesy video?  Who’s gonna get turned on by that?

You wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes, or shoelaces with heart or rainbow designs.
    Yes I did.

You wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer.

No…I wanted to sing on Solid Gold

You drowned yourself in Love’s Baby Soft –
which was the first “real” perfume you ever owned.
    I LOVED that stuff.
You glopped your lips in Strawberry Roll-on lip gloss till it almost dripped off.
    No…skin allergies.

  • The Pretty Boys…

This weekend, I was so happy to meet Lady_Songbird and RedHairedCelt for the first time this weekend while we were featured authors at a Barnes and Nobles New and Local Authors book signing (although neither of us are exactly new and I’m technically the only local) but still it was exciting!  GoJake, our friend and publisher, was also there and a good time was had by all.  RedHairedCelt was particularly lucky with her short story collection, so I rubbed her belly, but it didn’t help me.

Anyway, we got to talking about our favorite Pretty Boys, you know, the kind of man that hearkens back to Elizabethan sensibilities, one who could almost be a girl.  Here are my favorites:

    1.   Orlando Bloom Orlando Bloom appears to have just stepped out of the pages of a Shakespearean play.  He has a quality I find both delicate and rugged at the same time.

    2.     Johnny Depp has this haunted, soulful look in his eye with a glint of mischievousness behind it that has always appealed to me.

    3.  Hayden Christensen  Hayden Christensen was both brilliant and wounded as Anakin Skywalker pre-Darth Vader.  Ah yes…this soon into the list, my sci-fi/fantasy geekiness is already showing…

    4.    Milo Ventigmilia from the new NBC hit series, “Heroes” which if you haven’t checked out, you really should!  Its one of the most interesting concepts that has been on television in quite some time.  Save the Cheerleader…Save the World.  He can rescue me anytime!

    5.    Elijah Woods has these otherworldly luminous blue eyes.  And yes, he played Frodo.  One ring to rule them all, one ring to bind them…

    6.  Brad Pitt  Brad Pitt, well, he’s sort of an obvious choice.  I’ve always been somewhat irritated that he manages to have better hair than half the women I know…

    7.    Back to the show Heroes, Santiago Cabrera plays the man who paints the future.

    8.    My first crush ever, Mark Hamill, a.k.a. Luke Skywalker.  Now no jokes about lightsabers…

    9.   Brandon Routh  Brandon Routh, the new Superman.  He did a fine job reprising the role that Christopher Reeve began.  I hope to see more of him in that role.

    10.  Tobey Maguire  Last but not least, Tobey Maguire tops off my Pretty Boy list.  I have immensely enjoyed his first two turns as Peter Parker and his alter-ego Spiderman and I am looking forward to film #3 this summer.

And shocked though some of you may be, my secret boyfriend, Jackson Browne, is not on this list.  Technically, he is not what one could consider a Pretty Boy, so he will be saved for another time.

  • Surrealism, Part 1

I was a facilitator at a workshop this weekend for Surrealist Poetry in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh this weekend.  It was fun, and wrote a few things this weekend along with the students.

This was written using the exercise called “20 Words.”  I’m sure its self explanatory, but just in case, you get a list of 20 random words and put them all in a poem.

    20 Words

    The lady in my reservoir

    is shouting Danger

under the black rumble of sad,

    collapsing beneath the weight

    of black magic

    and mad genius sex.

    The rodents of men

have crawled on her willing body

and left her crying at the sight

    of yellow hair.

    Go ahead and scream.

This next poem is quite odd.  It was written using the Paper Bag game.  You take magazines, old books, etc., and you cut out lines and words from them and put them in a paper bag and pull out several.  You have to use all the words and lines in their entirety and you’re only allowed to add conjunctions to connect the lines.

    Paper Bag

    “Frumenty and mince-pie,” the Gnat replied;

You are offered a choice between reflect:

To follow the marvelous psychological break,

    Work like sheepskin,

    Deny himself, carry his cross,

    Be starshine,

    But long of night.

    More on surrealism tomorrow…
